Kindle is testing a new subscription model by giving users a free subscription to the “digest edition” of Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine, in hopes they will subscribe to the extended edition for US$12 per year. The extended edition is a Kindle exclusive.
The offer “also hints at Amazon's more ambitious plans for the genre,” paidContent reported. Sci-fi readers are generally pretty tech-savvy, and are a good group to test new payment models on, the report pointed out. If the experiment works and readers subscribe, other magazine publishers may try something similar.
Those who subscribe to the free version can access it on their Kindle or Kindle reading apps for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android.
