UK satellite broadcaster is planning to increase spending on original UK programming by more than 50 percent over the next three years, MediaGuardian reported today.
Sky expects to spend £380 million this year (including its £40 million yearly investment in Sky News, Premier League football and other sports) and £600 million by 2014, CEO Jeremy Darroch said. The satcaster usually does not divulge the amount it spends on shows; this is the first time a figure has been put out, Variety noted.
Sky is expected to spend £2 billion on all its channels this year, with £1.6 billion of that being funneled to sports rights and on American programming for entertainment channels, including Sky1 and Sky Atlantic.
The news comes as the government is expected to give News Corp. approval to buy the 61 percent of BSkyB it does not already own.
