Pew: U.S. social networking users up, 56% are female

The proportion of U.S. social networking site users has increased to 47 percent in 2010 from 26 percent in 2008, according to the latest survey by Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project.

The average age of social networking site users has been up from 33 to 38. More than half of them are over 35 and 56 percent are female, according to the study of 2,225 American adults, Media Post reported.

Facebook was on the top with 92 percent of respondents using it, versus 29 percent on MySpace, 18 percent on LinkedIn, and 13 percent on Twitter.

Pew found that 15 percent of respondents update their Facebook status on an average day, 22 percent comment on some friend's post or status. Two out of 10 comment on photos, 26 percent "Like" some user’s content, while one out to 10 send a private message to another user.

Pew also pointed out that Facebook's growth has been slow down recently. In May, it lost 6 million users in U.S., the first time it has dropped in the past year.

Facebook typically reaches saturation when it hits half of a country's population, which is where it is in the U.S., according to Inside Facebook.
