On news that Apple is loosening its monopolistic apps policies, the Guardian announced Friday that its app has been downloaded more than 400,000 times since its January launch.
The UK newspaper also said its mobile website accounts for more than 10 percent of its total traffic from digital sources.
The app gives users limited access to some Guardian content for free, while those who pay £2.99 for six months or those paying £3.99 annually have full access. Of the 403,388 who had downloaded it as of Friday, 67,258 chose the paid subscription. The app is free and ad-funded in the United States, where more than 36,000 people have downloaded it.
According to research from Ofcom, 3.6 million households, or about 17 percent of the population, in the United Kingdom use their mobiles to access the Internet, IAB UK reported.
