Media firms and ISPs partner to fight piracy

After years of negotiations, the music, movie and television industries in United States are teaming up with Internet service providers to fight against piracy, Time reported.

Based on an agreement announced yesterday, ISPs would identify suspected digital copyright infringement and then alert users via e-mail or other means, Boston.com reported.

Several “educational” alerts would be issues, with progressively harsher consequences. If the initial warnings were ignored, the agreement did not oblige ISPs to shut down the user’s account, but it noted carriers would retain their right to cut off any user who violated their terms of service.

This seemed to be a win for the RIAA and MPAA, which have been attempting to ally with ISPs to knock out illegal file sharing on the Web.

However, digital rights groups said that the move has potential to harm Internet user rights, PCWorld reported.
