Research: Internet-connected TV grows fast

Internet-connected television sets have been prosperous, and by the end 2011 the number will surpass that of game consoles for the first time, Media Post reported.

By the end of 2011, connected TV sets sold globally, from Samsung, LG and Sony, will reach 52 million, compared to 37 million game consoles from Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony, according to Informa Telecoms & Media.

"Until now, many online video services were launched primarily with the game console in mind, mainly because console users innately understand how to connect these devices and demand interactive video services from them," said Andrew Ladbrook, analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media.

Ladbrook added that the trend is changing because "connected TVs bring these services to a mainstream audience."

By 2016, there will be 1.8 billion in-home video devices sold, including tablets, and 70 percent of all in-home video devices sold will be capable of Internet-connection. However, connected TV sets might need to undergo a change by then. According to Informa, new TV set manufacturers will need to build and support platforms which work across both the latest and legacy video devices, Media Post reported.
