Social media sites have always skewed younger, typically under 25
years old. However, those demographics are changing for some sites. The
most age-diverse social sites are Facebook and LinkedIn, followed by
Google+, Twitter and YouTube. Meanwhile, the most age-polarised social
sites are Instagram and Tumblr, with 39 percent and 45 percent of their
active users between ages 16 and 24.
The migration of the 16-to 24-year-old age group from Facebook and other established platforms to newer social platforms is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Quora, Instagram and Pinterest are among the sites that are poaching the most 16-to 24-year-old users from established sites like Facebook, Google+ and YouTube.
World Newsmedia Network has published Global Digital Media Trendbook each year since 2006. The 2014 trendbook contains 500 data sets and 230 pages of analysis about digital media usage and revenue patterns, including this data set. To download the GDMT free executive summary, go to www.wnmn.org
