HBO app unlocks TV to go anywhere

HBO’s premium programme lineup is now available on the HBO Go app, which lives up to the “elegant solution” users expect from the paid-television network, paidContent’s Staci Kramer wrote today.

However, not just anyone can download the app. It is available to owners of iPhones, iPads or some Android devices, but those device owners must also pay certain cable and satellite operators can log in. Time Warner, which owns HBO, may consider offering the app on an a la carte basis, but that isn’t expected anytime soon, as there is still much “to mine from the TV Everywhere concept.”

The app has been downloaded more than 1 million times as of today, HBO co-president Eric Kessler announced, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Making HBO content available on a wider range of devices is not expected to hurt HBO DVD sales, he said: “Even if it impacts a small part of our DVD business, what drives the economics of our business is the subscription service,” which is further boosted by HBO Go, Kessler said.
