Lonely Planet shifts web operations to Britain


In response to weak sales and a strong Australian dollar, Lonely Planet is reorganising and moving its web operations from Melbourne to Britain, the Travel publisher said late last week, The Australian reported.

The BBC Worldwide-ownedcompany has lost A$13 million in revenues, and is looking to cut its cost base by 18 percent.

“And at the moment, we have more than 80 per cent of our revenues coming from outside of Australia and New Zealand with more than 70 per cent of our costs located in Australia,” CEO Matt Goldberg said in a message to staff.

The company employs 450 staff around the world, 350 of which are in Australia. Some online staff will be given an offer to relocate to BBC Worldwide’s complex in west London.
