UK music download sales reach £1 billion

In the past seven years since legal digital services were launched in the United Kingdom, music fans have spent more than £1 billion to download them, MediaGuardian reported last week.

Last year alone, digital sales grew 20 percent, and spending on digital albums grew 23 percent, to £146 million, since the format launched in 2006, figures from industry trade body BPI show.

“Breaking this symbolic barrier is important for the music industry in the face of online piracy and illegal downloading,” the BBC’s Dan Whitworth pointed out.

The news is also encouraging for record companies, who will be pleased with the upward trend.

The most popular album download is currently Adele’s “21,” followed by Lady Gaga’s “The Fame.”
