eBay mobile transactions expected to hit $4 billion in 2011

Since 2009, eBay has been one of the leaders in mobile e-commerce; its apps created for the iPhone, Android and other mobile platforms have been downloaded more than 40 million times.

Although mobile still accounts for a small part of the company's revenue, it is growing at a skyrocketing pace.

Regarding gross volume sales, the total volume in dollars of transactions across eBay sites reached US$610 million in 2009, and under $2 billion in 2010. The figures are expected to boost to $4 billion this year, said Steve Yankovich, the company's vice president of mobile, in a conference call with equities research firm MacQuarie Research, Media Post reported.

According to Yankovich, eBay's m-commerce business is growing faster in the United Kingdom and Australia. Another driver of the growth is the rising smartphone adoption in emerging markets.

Last month, eBay agreed to purchase Where Inc., to boost its local mobile efforts, Media Post reported.
