The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has published a report on the state of the media in the digital age, showing a large gap in local news, investigative and watchdog journalism, paidContent reported.
However, the report does not have any solutions on how to solve the problems.
In local news reporting, the number of reporters in key places, like government, is down substantially. Between 2003 and 2008, the number of statehouse reporters in California dropped from 40 to 29, and in Texas from 28 to 18, for example.
Daily newspapers have cut their staffs by more than 25 percent from 2006 to 2009, and compared to 1985, news magazine staffs are down by half.
